Creativity

4th Lecture and Tutorial 30 June 2015
Post- understanding
Like oh myy....my thought is completely different from the class. More applicable for advertising I guess. So based on Msia Media & Culture
Creativity is come from the 4C's
-Curiousity (desire to know)
-Confidence (self-stable)
-Courage
-Change

Pre-understanding

An interesting question to me once I saw the fb post.
"Where does inspiration for creativity come from?"

I do believe inspiration always come into your mind at your least expectation especially when you are craving something new for your work/ assignment. It might be the time when you're having your maggie goreng or when you're showering, walking or even dreaming. So do I. But to get all these happen, you have to understand and knowledge about the particular item that you want, then only you are able to relate and think out of the box.

To be honest, our creativity has been limited since young. Those days, we're taught to colour the plant in green, sky in blue, hair in black etc. We do not have chance to explore and experiment new things and at the end of the day, we learned to be uncreative. But it is not a bad thing to me. Why?

Question
If you are given a piece of A4 paper to draw anything you like based on your creativity.
What will you draw? Why you draw that? Where's the idea come from?

So do creativity always come with a reason why...?

To me, I think creativity comes from constraints. As I said earlier, our thought is limited since young. There is a boundary for us to think out of the box. Therefore, it is just like holding a pen to link from a point (constraint) to another point (new idea). If without a boundary perhaps I will not know where to start from. It is a leading point to cross over. Do you agree?

So today, we as a creative industry student, have to train ourselves to become a creative person. I think creativity is something to do in our brain which called as imagination. Lets start with it! Try to connect something seems unconnected together; try to create something without follow the rules and logics and you will be surprised that it will be your master piece.

Looking forward to this discussion on Tuesday.

Patriotism VS Nationalism

3rd Lecture and Tutorial 23 June 2015

Back to those days, I was the one who always dancing on stage with my bunch of mates. No matter what festival it is, we will never fail to perform the so called "Tarian Satu Malaysia". I led to pledge for the national principle (Rukunegara), brought national flags (Jalur Gemilang) to the class, let all my classmates put on their tables, deco the class, joined the Merdeka countdown etc. Like wow (gila betul budak ni) ! So practically, I think myself was very patriotic because I was really 'semangat' to do all these on that time. Every morning will sing national anthem state song in school but now, no more. We are lacking these kind of activities since we entered university. As we know that dance, music all these are arts. That's why I strongly believe arts and cultures can really bring people together like nothing else; it can speak directly to our emotions and bring us together to celebrate both similarities and differences. This is how I connect to my country. Perhaps we can try to do something like what we did in high school? But I think it will be tough. A simple example "How many of us will open mouth and sing loudly when you hear the national anthem? No right?  (even myself sometimes will just mumble)

As I mentioned above, patriotism is something you can show by using visual symbol. It is hard to present if only with your mouth of words. I do proud to be Malaysian, living in a multi- cultures and races place. Stronger feeling of proudness comes when Datuk Lee C.W won the badminton, when Datuk Nicole David won the squash etc. Don't you? I dare not to say I love my country because definitely I will not fight/ die for it. I will just try to be respecting and obeying the rule even sometimes forced to be. Ya I'm saying GST.

When we talk about nationalism is just something the government imposed on us such as the language, car, costume etc. These things can eventually differentiate us apart. It shows the identity of a true Malaysian based on certain culture and background. Like a lady wears Batik/ Baju Kurung and speaks in Bahasa Melayu will be a very goof example.

A brief Negaraku composed by three of us (Khailin, Nisshanthi and I)

Together, together
We love Malaysia
We hold hands
Share the laughs and tears

Together together
We are 1 Malaysia
One heart one mind
Just need sometime

Jokes here jokes there
We are still in a line
Multiraces multicultures
Make us one of a kind

--end--

p/s: I found Chuck's post is pretty interesting. So do have a view =)

Another Country

13 June 2015, 8.30pm @ DPAC
Directed by Malaysia's Jo Kukathas and Singapore's Ivan Heng.

Is another type of performing art in my life. A text exchange performance with Malaysian actors performing Singaporean texts and vice versa. Previously, I went to KLPAC for the show called "Ancient Inscriptions". It's a nice dancing performance about the history and the evolution of chinese characters. What make these two shows so different yet so alike is the way they performed. They tend to communicate with audience by using facial expression, voice and body language in live, so this is what we called performing art.

My feelings and thoughts
I was so shocked during the Daulat: Long Live scene. Not only that particular scene but the whole show actually; they presented the stories without any boundaries. I was thinking "No censorship one meh? What if people complain their content? " Question after question.

I absolutely agree with Ting Hui: "Then, I came to realization that politics often draw borders and divide people, but arts portray emotion and unite people by making connections in between audience, actors and the content of the art. It's fascinating to think theatre plays a crucial role in changing the way how the society think." We actually know what's happening in our reality and this critic becomes so true especially when you can hear the crowd's laughter on that night. What I can conclude from this is....We are so Malaysian. The typical Malaysian. Laugh but no action

The most memorable scene
Many of us love Mama Looking For Her Cat -written by the late Kuo Pao Kun (1998) simply because of their acting and the language used (Hokkien and Tamil). Actually, this script is about the communication difference between a mother and her children which reflecting Singapore's multilingualism and multiculturalism.  This has portrayed the estranged relationship in the society.

Many more issues can be discussed based on the show. Anyway I like the actors so da laaaa photo! (just gt two here hehe XD)

2nd Lecture and Tutorial 16 June 2015

Film VS Drama?
Film
-recorded
-technical effect (editing)
-indirect contact with audience
-play with camera angle
-one narrative

Drama
-live, immediate
-direct contact with audience
-more exaggerate (depends on the audience response)
-change scene/section

Catharsis  is a term introduced by Aristotle, the Greek philosopher which means the process of relieving strong feelings after being entertained. Well, we said "Another Country" refuse to obey the Catharsis theory because the directors want us to question about it. We did not achieve our satisfaction with the more than-one narratives which we didn't expected/controlled.

Revise [Another Country]
Malaysia team VS Singapore team
Malaysia team changed different clothing and they are more energetic compared to the Singapore team perhaps they intended to bring up the atmosphere. Also, they acted irrespective of race, gender and religion whereas Singapore team act accordingly to the race, gender and religion. Singapore team performed in the same space which did not involved much movement compare to Malaysia team who go in and out of frame.

Let's review one of the play Forever Singlish. The actors mentioned this "Proper English? So lehcheh, so correct, so actsy for what?" Despite this, I feel that it is still considered broken English, same as Malaysian's Manglish. *hahaha face palm

Hello peeps!

Hi! I'm yinping ( Ice). After viewing everyone's blog, I have much more confidence to say that blogging will definitely bring our class to another level by learning from each other. Is a pretty good starting point. Cheers!

1st Lecture 9 June 2015
It was the first class with Dr Carmen, Ms Edaline and Mr Kevin. To be honest, I don't think this subject will make any difference to me after this semester at first. But I changed my mind when we have such good lecturer and tutors (claps). Now, I'm so much excited to know more about our country. Thing becomes interesting when the whole class loves Malaysian Media& Culture.

Do you identify as a Malaysian? Why?
Yes. I have my birth cert, identity card, license, passport and so on.
I was born in Selangor, stay in Selangor.
I'm multilingual. Especially I can speak Malay (official language).
I know our national anthem and national principles (Rukunegara) .
I know Malaysia culture which only Malaysian shared that kind of experiences.

But, another the question comes:
How do you prove that you're a Malaysian when u lost your identity card, passport....?
Obviously, this question made me stunned for a minute because I've never experience it.
To show you are a Malaysian, of course you have to be excel in speaking bahasa.

Does it matter?
Well I don't think it is a matter to me because I'm not that patriotic compared to the past. After read my friends' blog, on second thought--it does. Malaysian always have the human rights! For instance, the right to voice out, to vote, to have discount, to complain etc.

If you are not a Malaysian, you will never understand this line:
Anei! you want to makan here or dabao?
It contains four types of language. (Malay, English, Mandarin& Tamil)

Proud to be a Malaysian.
